From its inception, hip-hop has served as a means to unite communities. But how has the genre affected the political world?
In “Stare in the Darkness: The Limits of Hip-hop and Black Politics,” author Lester K. Spence explores the impacts of hip-hop and rap culture on a growing population of activists and artists.
“MCs, activists, pundits and citizens alike believe that rap lyrics communicate politics; they believe that hip-hop can be used to circulate and generate a new form of political activism, and that rap consumption shifts political attitudes,” writes Spence.
